Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE; South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. Two earthtone textile panel fragments - each is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in gold, cream, brown, maroon, and black hues. The composition of the Chancay textile includes a smaller area of abstract geometric motifs. It also displays a larger area, unattached at the side walls, featuring an anthropomorphic figure with long bent legs, almond-shaped eyes, and a curved tail. The Wari textile pouch features several vertical columns of abstract geometric designs as well as abstruse lizard-shaped zoomorphic figures. Each textile is mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 10" L x 5" W (25.4 cm x 12.7 cm) for the Chancay textile; and 10.125" L x 10" W (25.7 cm x 25.4 cm) for the Wari textile.

Provenance: private Slavin Collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
