Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay Culture, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. This brightly-colored textile fragment is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in red, gold, pink, maroon, and brown hues. The composition is comprised of large solid bands of red on the top and bottom, and several diagonal rows of differently colored bird figures all in the characteristic abstract style of typical Chancay artistry. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 4.5" L x 4.25" W (11.4 cm x 10.8 cm).

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
