Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A fine pair of hand-carved bowls: one made from wood and the other from a gourd. Presenting a hue of reddish brown, the larger bowl was built from a single piece of wood, skillfully sculpted to display a planar base and thick walls that rise to an ovoid rim above a shallow basin. Impressively smooth due to sanding by the carver and weathering and wear from the years, the walls of the ancient dish feature light scratching patterns throughout. Alternatively, the second bowl is made from a gourd and exhibits a round base, thin walls, and an ovoid rim over a deep basin. Showcasing a lustrous burnish, the chocolate-hued exterior of the vessel has been carefully incised with a lovely, checkered pattern, while its interior features a shade of caramel and an incised starburst design. Size (of largest): 6" L x 5.5" W x 1.875" H (15.2 cm x 14 cm x 4.8 cm)
