Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, Nayarit culture, ca. 500 CE. This pair of Nayarit bowls impresses us for their aesthetic stylings as well as intriguing iconography. The smaller one boasts fine, thinly built walls and a rich decorative program with geometric motifs painted in cream and orange on a red base. The larger bowl is full of surprises. While the interior is deceptively plain, the underside features an incised composition comprised of intersecting double-headed creatures that create four quadrants, each one occupied with a t-shaped form framing an upward arrow. All is carved on a gorgeous carmel brown surface further adorned with a dramatic smoke cloud. 7"D x 2"T (larger bowl) and 4 1/4"D x 1 3/4"T (smaller bowl) Provenance: Ex-George Martin Collection, Georgia, USA All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
