Pre-Columbian, Ixtlan del Rio, Nayarit State, Mexico, ca. 100 BCE to 200 CE. Brown earthenware with cream slip and black paint. A powerful figure with all the classic plasticity for which Ixtlan type sculptures are known. The hunkered image represents a man who has undergone numerous self-inflicted sacrificial slits to his facial cheek areas. Related earthenware examples show several figures bound together at the cheeks with long sticks or poles, presumably made of wood. 7-1/4"H. Provenance: Ex-Bick Family collection, Casey Key, FL, since early 1950's.
