Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two handbuilt bichrome terracotta musician figures - both of the traditional sheepface variety with dramatically protruding noses, ovoid eyes with white painted depressions, and pointed ears on their elongated visages - one depicting a seated drummer with an elaborate headdress and magnificent ear ornaments, beating his large, cylindrical drum with one hand and holding his chin with the other - the other standing and playing a hand-held percussive instrument. This figure also wears an elaborate headdress and ear ornaments as well as a multistrand beaded necklace, armbands, a belt, dotted face paint / tattoos, and sandals. Both are skillfully hand-built, modeled, and finished in an attractive bichrome red and cream finish. Size: taller figure measures 9.25" H (23.5 cm)
