Description:

North America, Green River Formation, modern-day Wyoming, Lower Eocene period, ca. 50 millions years ago. A pair of stone-cased fish fossils. The morphology of both specimens, most notably the upturned mouths, are typical of surface-feeding fish. The genus it belongs to are herrings that probably fed on smaller surface-dwelling fish such as Knightia. Many fossils have been found with Knightia in their stomachs or mouths. Both fish have broad flared tails and visible skeletal structures and fins, and the smaller fish displays extremely fine bristle-like teeth. Set in stone backings. Size of smaller fish: 5.125" W x 1.875" H (13 cm x 4.8 cm); backing size: 9.875" W x 7.875" H (25.1 cm x 20 cm). Size of larger fish: 10.25" W x 3.5" H (26 cm x 8.9 cm); backing size: 13.25" W x 9.375" H (33.7 cm x 23.8 cm).
