Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tairona region, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE; Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A charming pair of pottery vessels, both in the form of zoomorphs and enveloped in rich black slip. Standing upon 4 short legs, the larger vessel is from Tairona culture and presents in the form of a dog with a voluminous body and a broad, cylindrical head that opens at the top to a flared rim. The animal's stylized visage displays a narrow, projecting snout, a prominent nose, a slightly open mouth, and a pair of bulging eyes, flanked by 2 round ears. Its attenuated tail lays across its back, exhibiting horizontal ridges and a bifurcated tip. Alternatively, the more petite, Chimu jar has a spherical body, a tubular spout, and a ribbon-form handle, all sitting upon a flat base. The animal's petite head rises from one side, showcasing a pointed nose, a wide mouth, ovoid eyes, and perky ears. His limbs are shown in relief, folded around his body, as a thick tail curls at his back. Size of largest: 7.4" L x 4.5" W x 6.9" H (18.8 cm x 11.4 cm x 17.5 cm)

  • Condition: More petite vessel is repaired from several pieces with break lines and adhesive visible, as well as small areas of loss to rim, proper left ear, and below neck. Larger repaired with restoration and minor losses to base of tail, proper left ear, and front, right foot. Both have expected nicks and abrasions as shown. Otherwise, both are very nice with light earthen deposits.
