Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A trio of hand-built pottery jars of red-slipped designs decorated with dark negative resist motifs. The first jar has rectangular and diamond-shaped motifs atop its high shoulder as well as a thick, flared rim, and the larger vessel is decorated with parallel columns and crosshatched cruciform motifs. The largest round-bottomed jar has a carinated spherical body, a flared neck with 2 lug handles, and an upper body adorned with parallel lines, large X's, and plaited bands. Size of largest: 4.4" W x 4.2" H (11.2 cm x 10.7 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-private Arkansas, USA collection, via descent in 2021; ex-private Florida estate, USA, acquired from the 1960s to 1970s

  • Condition: Each piece has minor nicks and abrasions, with fading to negative resist motifs and pigment, a few small spalls, and light surface roughness in scattered areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice manganese deposits and good preservation to negative resist motifs in most areas.
