Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A charming pair of redware vessels: one with an anthropomorphic face and the other capped by a monkey. The first exhibits a voluminous body with a round base, a wide shoulder, and a conical neck displaying features of a human face with ovoid eyes, a pinched nose, a jutting chin, and an incised mouth, all flanked by a pair of prominent ears and crowned with a gently flared rim. Liberal remains of a black, abstract design embellish the shoulder. Alternatively, the other jar showcases a monkey laying atop the egg-shaped body - his limbs spread and slightly bent as a coiling tail rises from his posterior, the slender neck and out-splayed rim of the vessel project from his back, and his adorable head protrudes forward displaying bulging eyes, a round nose, parted lips, and a pair of curved ears. Note how the animal's head and tail double as handles for the vessel. Size of larger (jar with monkey): 6.3" Diameter x 9.3" H (16 cm x 23.6 cm)

  • Condition: Minor losses to rim of monkey vessel and rim and nose of anthropomorphic jar. Softening of detail on monkey. Both have expected nicks, abrasions, and areas of fire-darkening. Otherwise, both are very nice with great earthen deposits.
