Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine display of a traditional backstrap loom with a partially finished textile and wooden frame. The textile is made from camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers in hues of brown and creamy beige with a completed register of stylized birds. The braided suspension cord tied to the bar was used to secure one end of the loom to a pole or tree and a second cord on the opposite bar would wrap around the waist of the seated weaver. Mounted on a cloth and wooden frame, this is an educational example of a centuries old Peruvian style of weaving that is still practiced today! Size (loom): 14" L x 11" W (35.6 cm x 27.9 cm); (frame backing): 18" L x 20" W (45.7 cm x 50.8 cm)
