Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Ramu River region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine set of two hand-carved wooden ceremonial staves with corseted hand grips in the middle of each body. Each staff has a stylized anthropomorphic figure on top as the finial, and the heads have woven hair nets with shoots of dark horse hair projecting from the top. The figural finials sit atop a tower of stacked anthropomorphic and zoomorphic characters, and the bodies taper to a narrow bottom point. Covered in dark patina, these are two wonderful sculptural examples from Papua New Guinea! Size of largest: 3.5" W x 79" H (8.9 cm x 200.7 cm).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
