Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid 20th century CE. A massive and surprisingly light ceremonial dance costume, made to be worn on the head, constructed of wooden fibers around a thin frame. The top is a wide, sail-like elongated oval with a spike finial. This is attached to a conical hat with a wide, round brim and a hanging flap that covers the neck. The surface is decorated with fractal-like, interlocking black and red motif on a pale beige background. Size: 15.25" L x 15.5" W x 72" H (38.7 cm x 39.4 cm x 182.9 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Wear on surface commensurate with age, including wear to pigmented surfaces and fraying to woven edges, especially on the brim. The spike finial is partially lost. Nice preservation of form and motifs.
