Description:

North America, probably Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of hand-carved wooden stirrups for use in equestrian riding. Each stirrup exhibits a pyramidal form with a hollow cavity on the back for the rider to insert his or her foot. The fronts are incised with a large, inverted heart filled with spiraling tendrils, and the lateral walls bear columns of vertical bands and X-filled rectangles to emulate a buckle. Atop each piece is an integral strap housing so the stirrup could hang off the side of a saddle. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 5.8" W x 7" H (14.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
