Description:

New World, Spanish Colonial, Mexico / Mesoamerica, ca. 19th century CE (larger); early 20th century CE (more petite). A pair of hand-carved wood santos depicting Franciscan friars, each wearing their traditional hooded robe and a tonsured coiffure, and enveloped in liberal remains of white, peach, blue, and brown pigments. Both standing atop integral plinths, the figures bend their arms at the elbows, extending their forearms outwards. The more petite santo cups his right hand while his left carries a book capped by an object, perhaps a candle. Size: 3.8" W x 11" H (9.7 cm x 27.9 cm)

  • Condition: Larger santo is missing forearms and more petite santo is missing feet. Both have expected surface wear with nicks, chips, and abrasions as shown. Some repainting, but liberal remains of pigments throughout.
