Description:

Near East, Oman, Bedouin culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand coiled basket made from dried palm fronds, the base is reinforced with a circular patch of goat leather. Baskets were made for everyday use such as milking livestock and the lidded vessels were often made for storage of personal items, such as jewelry and incense. For centuries nomadic and semi-nomadic Bedouin peoples have relied on goats and camels - with goats primarily kept and sold for their meat, and camels for transportation and milk. Such baskets are a testament to the resourcefulness of desert-dwelling artisans, who skillfully use the limited materials available to meet their everyday needs. Size: 7" Diameter x 7.5" H (17.8 cm x 19 cm)
