Description:

Near East, Palestine, ca. mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial woman's headdress, known as a "wuqayat al-darahim" (loosely translating to "coin safeguard"), worn by the bride during a wedding and related ceremonies. The headdress features a coin fringe that drapes over the forehead. It is primarily adorned with densely packed brass coins from the Ottoman Empire, arranged in rows, with some additional coins from Turkey with years from the 1930s ands 1940s. Each coin has a hole punched through its edge and is secured to the cloth with cotton threads. Polished brass and copper pieces, fashioned from coin metal, dangle loosely near the top. Glass beads, including protective "evil eye" designs, are attached above the brow. The coins and charms were believed to protect the wearer from harm, with most of the coins traditionally provided by the groom's family. Over time, other valuable coins and ornaments were often added, reflecting the wearer's personal history and status. This cherished heirloom was typically passed down through generations for daughters to wear. Size: 6" L x 8" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection; ex-D. Meyerson Estate, California, acquired 1980s to 1990s
