Description:

Perfect for impressing your guests...

British Colombia, Northwest Coast, Native American, Jasper Peter, ca. 20th century CE. An impressive wooden feast bowl, finely carved, painted, and embellished with abalone and white shell inlays by Nootka Native American artist Jasper Peter (an attribution label on the verso). The two ends or handles are carved with expressive visages with fine features and expressive eyes. Joining these termini and surrounding the carved bowl are six rectangular white shell inlays that contrast beautifully with the black hued finish of the wood. Size: 12" (30.5 cm)

Nootka (Nuu-chah-nulth meaning 'It goes around') is the popular though technically erroneous name used to identify the Mowachaht people, an Aboriginal people of the Nootka Sound along the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island and around Cape Flattery in the US. These indigenous peoples date back at least 4,000 years on this land. The Nuu-chaj-nulth were expert woodworkers, known for their cedar canoes and beautiful pieces like this example.
