Papua New Guinea, ca. 1920s to 1940s CE. A wonderful pair of ancestral figures representing a male and female, their hand built forms made from wound natural fibers and clay, nicely painted and still showing red, grey, and black pigments, their expressive visages adorned with red face paint, inlaid shell eyes, inlaid shell teeth lining their open mouths, a human hair beard and cloth/shell headdress on the male, a netted veil on the female. Wood block stands. Size: male measures 17.5" H (44.4 cm); 18.5" H (47 cm) on stand

The male also wears a shell necklace, an impressively large crescent moon shaped shell pendant, and a line suspending an instrument or mat comprised of reeds around his neck, as well as a long loin cloth comprised of textile netting and raffia. The female wears a shell necklace and a skirt comprised of black painted rope and raffia. A fabulous pendant pair from the indigenous of Papua New Guinea.
