Description:

African, Northeast Nigeria, Upper Benue River, Nok Culture, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE.  An exceedingly rare piece created by the ancient Nok peoples of Jabba village, Zaria province in Nigeria. A tender mother and child figural pair that displays all the characteristics of the classical Nok style - an enlarged haughty head, high smooth forehead, cast-down eyes with linear upper and curved lower lids, elaborate coiffure, and intricately carved jewelry.  A complicated composition as the mother figure is holding her child in one arm, its head resting upon her knee, while the other arm is upraised toward her cheek.  Wonderful detail displayed in the hands, jewelry, and coiffure.  Remarkable sophistication achieved by a Nok sculptor more than two thousand years ago, a rare example! Includes custom stand. Size: 6-1/2"H; 7-1/8"H with stand. Provenance: Ex-private Pickard collection, Mr. Pickard began this collection in 1959 upon university work in Africa. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #101581
