West Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, West bank of Kasai River, Kuba culture, Shoowa subtribe, early 20th centur CEy. A striking carved wooden  cup of a wide and shallow form intended for drinking palm wine. In addition to the bowed form and low relief elaborately incised with geometric designs, the handle featuring a carving of a human figure with arms crossed over chest and flattened legs was created to reference the ancient cultural hero named Woot who, according to Kuba mythology, is the creator of mankind from whom all Kuba royalty descend, the legendary first human and founder of the Bushoong civilization, ca. 1625.  A wonderful example, finely carved with deep patina. Size: 8"x 3". Provenance: Ex-private Pickard collection, Oklahoma City, OK, Mr. Pickard began his collection in 1959 following university studies in Africa.
