Description:

Nigeria, Ekoi (Ejagham) peoples, early 20th century CE. This is carved wood covered in antelope skin, with a long, pointed nose, narrowed eyes, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. As in many parts of Nigeria, headdresses (also known as crest masks) are associated with secret societies. These are what men and women are initiated into as they go through various stages of life, starting with puberty. For example, in the past, there was a secret society for Ekoi who were hunters and the men who had killed leopards could wear the headdresses. This piece would have been made by carving the form from a single piece of wood and then covering it with soft antelope skin that had been soaked in water. The skin was tacked into place until it dried and stiffened. In use, this piece would have been decorated with hair, quills, feathers, and metal jewelry. Size: 6" W x 11.15" H (15.2 cm x 28.3 cm)
