Description:

Cameroon, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a wood mask with a pleasing, symmetrical shape and a straw/grass padding on its back depicting the head of a bush cow. Masks are incredibly important cultural artifacts in the grasslands of Cameroon; there are over seventy mask societies in one region alone, and each mask society consists of ten to twenty masks. In ceremonies, the first mask is a human face and the last is a bush cow, like this one. Masks are worn atop the head and the face is covered with a cloth to conceal identity during these ceremonies. The bush cow, a fierce animal found throughout West Africa, is commonly depicted on masks as a powerful, ferocious figure. Size: 3.5" W x 6.8" H (8.9 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1970.
