Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste-Nicoya, ca. 1000 to 1550 CE. A large terracotta tripod bowl supported by three legs in the form of stylized skulls that most likely were intended to hold rattles. Such bowls were intended for ceremonial use, during which they would be placed upon the head and produce percussive sounds as the wearer moved or danced about. Beyond its macabre legs, the bowl itself shows intricate incised decoration, the exterior walls with more geometric, textile inpired designs, the interior walls with scalloped and linear bands. A lovely example, particularly fun as Halloween is upon us! Size: 11-1/4" in diameter x 7-1/4"H. Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, a silent screen actress of the 1930's, Belaire, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110042

  • Condition: A few repairs and some surface wear as shown, but quite striking nonetheless.
