Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Casas Grandes, Ramos, ca. 1100 to 1200 CE. Enormous polychrome Casas Grandes pottery olla of large bulbous, round-bottomed body, corsetted to a gently flaring neck, of the early Ramos or possibly Babicora painting style as the designs painted in red and black do not touch. The body boasts lovely triangular and linear forms with curled terminals; the neck a fabulous checkerboard pattern. Size: 10"H x 11-1/2" in diameter.

The Babicora tradition is an outgrowth of the late Viejo period painting styles. In contrast, the later Ramos style—in which red paint is outlined in black—appears to be an intrusive style, possibly derived from Mimbres Polychrome. Babicora was produced via the same techniques as Ramos Polychrome; however, Babicora is believed to be a precursor to Ramos Polychrome.
