Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Nicephorus I & Stauracius, 802 to 811 CE. Gold solidus. Obverse: bust facing, with short beard, wearing crown and chlamys, and holding cross potent and akakia; in left field, pellet. Reverse: STAVRA CIS DESPO  X, facing bust of Stauracius, beardless, wearing crown and chlamys, and holding globus cruciger and akakia. During Nicephorus’ reign, Venice, Istria, and the Dalmatian coast were highly contested between Byzantium and Charlemagne until 810. Finally a tentative agreement was reached, which saw the disputed areas returned to Byzantium in exchange for Byzantine recognition of Charlemagne’s title of emperor. D.O. 2c7.
