Description:

Oceania, New Zealand, ca. mid-20th to 21st century CE. A superb Kauri wood adze known as a 'toki poutangata' with a nephrite jade blade lashed with vegetal fibers. The shaft is decorated with an abstract figure bearing a wheku-style face, the eyes inlaid with paua shell (nacre) that are hand-ground and polished by the artist. A secondary wheku face with paua eyes forms the pommel. A custom and removable wood base supports and displays this artwork. This exquisite piece is purportedly carved by Jack 'Rangi' Redman, although it is not signed. Redman was born around 1924 in Auckland and began carving Maori-inspired pieces in the 1950s. His work gained attention from art galleries, and he was allegedly commissioned to create carvings for visiting dignitaries during the 1995 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. As of 2019, Redman resides in Howick and continues to carve. Size: 15" L x 2" W x 9.25" H (38.1 cm x 5.1 cm x 23.5 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
