Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Tagalog and Kapampangan cultures, Colonial Period, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A firm, helmet-shaped headwear piece known as a salakot, traditionally worn by indigenous peoples such as the Tagalog and Kapampangan. This salakot features a hard structure crafted with a tightly woven canvas likely once coated in resin or pitch, stretched over a densely woven, basket-like frame of bamboo, rattan, and cotton fibers. A headband rim is set inside for secure fitting, and a cotton cord chin strap is attached to this area. Regional forms and styles of the salakot varied across the Philippines, but they were generally woven in domed or conical shapes, serving as practical protection against sun and rain - and as enduring cultural symbols. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries - amid the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American War - salakots resembling helmets were crafted specifically for combat purposes - it is unknown if this piece was used in such a way. Size: 10" L x 8" W x 6.5" H (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm x 16.5 cm)

Interestingly, the pith helmet - commonly referred to as a safari helmet - was inspired by the salakot! Originally adapted by European colonizers to suit tropical climates, this adoption of the salakot exemplifies the colonial tendency to appropriate indigenous innovations.
