Northwestern Africa, Mauritania, Sahara Desert region, Mesolithic to Neolithic period, ca. 24,000 to 6000 BCE. A cutting or scraping tool knapped from an umber-brown chert (flint) stone. In Mauritania, the transition from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period marked a significant shift in stone tool technology. During the Mesolithic, tools were primarily microliths, small, sharp flakes used for hunting and gathering. In the Neolithic, larger and more sophisticated tools like polished axes and grinding stones emerged, reflecting the development of agriculture and more settled lifestyles.
