Western Europe, probably Italy or France, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful jasper intaglio featuring the bust of a man, possibly a Roman emperor, in profile crowned by a laurel wreath, all mounted in an intricate gold ring. Facing left, the beardless male displays a thick coiffure, a sizable nose, deep-set eyes, and a protruding chin. The scarlet red stone is set in a piecrust bezel surrounded by a twisted rope motif border. Openwork and granulation additionally adorns the shoulders. Size of intaglio: 0.6" L x 0.5" W (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.9" W (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 8.75; gold quality: 74.4% (over 17 karats); weight: 5 grams
