Western Europe, Neoclassical and Victorian period, ca. 19th century CE. This is a stunning gold ring that that features a chalcedony agate cameo within a 73.38% gold (equivalent to 17K+) ring setting with twisted serpents that form an exquisite band. The white stone is carved in high relief with a very rounded visage of a jowly man with a broad nose and pursed lips under a mop of short hair. The agate is set in a formfitting bezel, the lip protrudes from a hemispherical setting that is incised on the underside with "P. CLODIVS / M.F" which may stand for P. Clodius, a Republican era Roman moneyer that issued coins around 42 BCE, his coins are often inscribed "P·CLODIVS·M·F·IIII·VIR·A·P·F." The split shoulders that support the cameo are formed by pair snakes that are twisted together, their slender bodies are lightly incised with a scaley texture. This unique ring is in excellent condition and wearable!   • Condition: Minor softening to finer cameo details and tiny black mineral inclusions, but intact and very good. Ring band has age and use expected wear, but overall excellent and intact. Incised script on verso is clear and legible. Ring is wearable!
