Western Europe, probably England or France, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely gold ring from Neoclassical Europe exhibiting a slender shank with bifurcated terminals, an octagonal bezel, and petite tines that hold an octagonal carnelian intaglio in place. Boasting warm vermilion and citrine hues, the carnelian intaglio features a sizable, right-facing bust of an older male figure - perhaps a philosopher or politician - with a shaggy coiffure, a prominent nose, an upturned gaze, and a protruding chin. Size (ring): 0.86" W x 0.97" H (2.2 cm x 2.5 cm); (shank): 0.86" Diameter (2.2 cm); (bezel): 0.64" W x 0.91" H (1.6 cm x 2.3 cm); (intaglio): 0.66" W x 0.88" H (1.7 cm x 2.2 cm); metal quality: 44% copper, 40.57% gold, 14% silver; weight: 6.3 grams; US ring size: 8.75
