Western Europe, Neoclassical, ca. 19th century CE. This is a wonderful brooch and pendant combination piece of jewelry, comprised of a gold setting and a lovely agate stone cameo of Urania, the muse of astronomy. She stands to the right before a short pillar, a celestial globe held before her, and draped in classical robes, a palm frond over one shoulder. The white of the figure contrasts well with the creamy pink agate background, and the stone is set in a smooth lip bezel with a filigree wire surrounding the slightly recessed base. The outer periphery of the ovoid bezel is decorated with a wavy filigree wire and granulated spheres and the verso contains an articulating pin and loop clasp, and the top has an integral loop with a modern bail for suspension. Size of cameo: 1" L x 0.72" W (2.5 cm x 1.8 cm); setting: 1.375" L x 1.125" W (3.5 cm x 2.9 cm); gold quality: 44.57% (equivalent to 10K+); weight: 6.3 grams

- Condition: Perforation to bezel on obverse along the twisted wire on left side near granulation. Small tear to bezel lip on verso, which is not visible on obverse and does not affect cameo. Pin articulates and fits into loop clasp but appears to be a newer replacement of nickel-silver. The hook bail on the pendant loop appears to also be a new brass replacement. Numbers etched into verso of cameo. Dark patina and toning on verso of gold setting. Cameo is intact and has sharp details. This cameo is wearable as either brooch or pendant.
