Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Neo-Babylonian period, ca. mid-1st millennium BCE. An interesting amulet carved from cow or ox bone depicting the head of Pazuzu (also Fazuzu or Pazuza) from Assyrian and Babylonian mythology. The head bears faded yet grotesque features such as wide eyes, a bulbous nose, huge cheeks, and sharp, clenched teeth with a tongue protruding from the center, and an integral suspension loop sticks up from the top. Pazuzu was the king of the demons of the wing and represented the southwestern wind as the bearer of storms, drought, famine, and locusts.
