Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 700 to 800 CE. A lovely pair of earrings comprised of 67% to 70% gold (equivalent to 16K+) sheets folded to create a hollow crescent body. A teardrop shaped bezel is set in the center of the body with a rope patterned border and four loops. Two posts protrude from the bottom of the crescent body with an openwork ovoid shape applied to the end. The large arching wire hooks are held by a hinge on one end and secured by a pin clasp, that no longer articulates. These stunning earrings have granulated decorations embellishing their bodies.   • Condition: Missing the bottom ornament on one. Wire hook is slightly bent, and there is a small perforation on the center of the body on one. Patina on the hinges and recessed areas. Surface wear and indentations to body with softening of details. The wire hook does not articulate. Could be made wearable with a setting created by a professional jeweler.
