Native American, Southeastern or Midwestern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 900 to 1450 CE. A necklace constructed with beads shaped from shell, stone, or pottery. Four discoid stone beads, 2 carinated pottery beads, and a central pottery pendant are interspersed between dozens of slender, white-hued shell beads. The use of shells in Mississippian culture was an important part of ritual and status as their spirals were oftentimes construed as cosmological symbols. Size (necklace): 24" L (61 cm); (central pendant): 1.4" W (3.6 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Shell, pottery, and stone beads are ancient; stringing is modern. Minor nicks and surface roughness to some beads, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall forms.
