Description:

Ancient Near East, Early Middle Bronze Age, ca. 3300 to 1600 BCE. A rare buff fired clay animal in a stylized form with a long neck, a plump body, and pointed horns. The animal is probably some kind of ungulate, probably representing the near-universal ancient symbol of the Sacred Bull. This animal, immortalized in the Bible by the story of the Golden Calf, represents what may be the oldest known object of worship in human history - cave painters at Lascaux and Livernon show aurochs, and the bull seems to have been worshiped by the people of Alaca Hoyuk alongside the sacred stag. This sculpture is a reminder of this ancient worship of a potent symbol of virility and sheer strength. Size: 6.25" L x 4" W x 6.8" H (15.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 17.3 cm)
