Description:

Ancient Near East, similar in style of Hasanlu (modern day Azerbaijan/Iran), ca. 1000 BCE. This is a small knobbed mace head -- although the small size of similar objects may suggest that they were cast to be staff or sceptre heads. The archaeological site of Husanlu, active throughout the Bronze Age and beyond, dominates the plan of Solduz and consists of a high mound (known as "the citadel") with paved streets and enormous fortifications surrounded by a smaller, less impressive town space. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has similar examples, as shown in Bronze and Iron by Oscar White Muscarella (1988). Size: 1.7" L x 2" W (4.3 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
