Description:

Hittite, ca. 1100 to 700 BCE. This is a large cast bronze axe head with a linear design on its socket that gives the impression of coiled loops. Decorated axe heads like this were often the product of patronage from Hittite rulers. They would have been made to be used in temples as stand ins for a god; for example, in the Middle Bronze Age, there is written evidence that legal judgments were passed before a bronze dagger associated with a god, and artwork from this period also shows swords being worshipped as gods. Size: 6.75" L x 3" W (17.1 cm x 7.6 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
