Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A hand-carved wooden atl atl (also atlatl, atl-atl) of a rod-shaped form with a smooth top section and mud covering most of the main body. Small fiber wrappings on both ends each hold a petite cast-copper finial, the lower of a serpentine form with an open mouth, and the upper of a stylized llama head with perky ears and a rounded snout. This example of an atl atl exhibits a distinctive Peruvian style, a short rod with an attached hook, and a curved decorative projection at the handle. Atl atls were used in warfare, hunting, and ritual ceremonies. Size: 15.3" L (38.9 cm); 12.375" H (31.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s
