Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A wonderful pottery cup with a rounded base, a corseted body, and a slightly flared rim rising from the deep basin. The cream-slipped exterior is decorated with two instances of the Anthropomorphic Mythical Being (AMB) with cat-like whiskers, diamond-shaped eyes, and petite legs dangling beneath a sash of trophy heads. The creature holds an additional head in one extended arm and a staff in the other, and an abstract bird flies off with corn cobs from one side of the grand headdress. The orange, blue, red, brown, beige, and white hues exhibited here are characteristic of high-quality Nazca artistry. Size: 5.5" W x 4.875" H (14 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s and 1960s
