Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery drinking vessel called a kero with a round but stable base, a broad lower body, and a gently carinated upper body with a thin rim. Presented on the lower body is a black-and-white anthropomorphic portrait with a perky nose and protruding ears, full lips accentuated with red pigment, semicircular eyes between thick tattooed bars, and petite serrations marking the nasolabial folds, all beneath a russet-hued headdress wrapped with a white-and-orange sling. Size: 5.6" W x 5.9" H (14.2 cm x 15 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s

  • Condition: Repairs and restoration to rim and upper body, with resurfacing and overpainting to new material and break lines. Minor abrasions to base, face, upper body, and rim, with light touch-up paint to some areas of face, and light encrustations within basin. Nice traces of original pigment throughout.
