Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A large, hand-built pottery vessel depicting a fisherman with his head protruding from one side of the round-bottomed body. The spherical body has a wide carination around the midsection, a conical spout projecting up from the back, and a bridge handle arching between the spout and head. The highly burnished exterior features vibrant red, orange, brown, white, and black hues that compose the fisherman's bent arms and legs, bulbous body, and spot-patterned gourds that keep him afloat. The stylized head features wide ovoid eyes, a protruding nose, full lips, and a net-patterned cap behind a frontal tab protruding from the forehead. Size: 5.9" W x 6" H (15 cm x 15.2 cm)

  • Condition: Professional repair from multiple pieces, with restoration, resurfacing, and overpainting along new material and break lines. Light nicks and abrasions to head, body, and base, with minor fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigment throughout. The name "R. Sonin" written in pencil beneath base.
