Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel depicting a dignified figure wearing diamond-patterned sashes capped with jaguar heads. The wide-eyed countenance stares forward from beneath a simple cap and a flared rim and is lined along the front with serpent-headed tie strands. The vessel sits on a round but stable base and has a bulging body festooned with four intricately decorated strands bearing a total of 8 stylized jaguar heads, and all surfaces are embellished with red-orange pigment. Size: 9.2" W x 11.25" H (23.4 cm x 28.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Dr. W.M. Bogdanowicz, Naples, Florida, USA; ex-Dr. Mark P. Gonzales collection, acquired from his father-in-law, Dr. J. Bryan Brasington, who was a pastor and missionary in Peru, acquired between 1955 and 1971
