Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery cup adorned with vibrantly colored depictions of the fierce "Anthropomorphic Mythical Being." Each instance of the creature features large eyes, a forked tongue protruding from grinning mouths, and extended hands. The AMB is an entity that can be interpreted as underworld deities or demons, and this notion is furthered by the presence of 2 columns of fish. Below the figural program is a register of stepped motifs, and a large red X spans the diameter of the base. Size: 4.625" W x 4" H (11.7 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection, by inheritance, collected mid-1980s
