Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 125 to 250 CE. An impressive globular shaped pottery bottle with double spouts bridged by a flat handle, meticulously painted with two anthropomorphic mythical beings in hues of red, orange, cream, black and tan on white ground, each wearing a feline mouth mask and grasping a trophy head in one hand and a club in the other. The beings are essentially of a human form with feline features in the visage, with lateral whiskers that also appear to be stylized trophy heads. The creatures are adorned with forehead ornaments, bangles in the hair and a bird-like form across the top as well as a segmented, spondylus shell necklace. The Nazca worshipped several mythical beings or deities, each being the subject of particular myths; however, no written records delineating the details of their mythology have survived. Size: 8-1/8" (20.6 cm) in diameter x 6-1/4"H (15.9 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Crested Butte, CO collection, acquired in 1987. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
