Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 1 to 700 CE. A tall ceramic drinking cup or kero of a tall and undulating form, extensively decorated with registers comprised of figural motifs in hues of tan, white, black, red and grey. The iconographical program from bottom to top; first, a register of four female faces adorned with what may be interpreted as teardrops, lower lashes, face paint or tattoos, followed by a register of red, black, and cream thin striations, above this four more frontal visages nearly identical to those of the lowest register, and finally two flying costumed shamans in elaborate regalia personifying the principal life-force on earth within the upper register. A beautiful and elegant form with a richly symbolic iconographical program. Nice manganese deposits as well! Size: 8" (20.3 cm) x 4-1/8" (10.5 cm).
