Pre-Columbian, Nazca culture, Peru South Coast, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A lovely steep-sided bowl with a flared rim from the early period of the Nazca culture. It features an exterior painted with Janus-headed, entwined serpents, each with long tongues, round eyes, and bodies studded with spikes. Their undulating bodies encircle the vessel, which also features a warm red interior and a darker red interior rim. Size: 6.75" W x 4" H (17.1 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to the 1960s
