Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl with a burgundy ground decorated with 3 stylized lizards, each with colorfully striped bodies, petaloid head, clawed feet, and lengthy tails. Animals are rarely depicted in Nazca art of this time period, but lizards are found in small numbers alongside foxes, felines, snakes, and a few others, suggesting that the Nazca were keenly aware of the natural world and had closely observed it. Size: 6.5" W x 4.5" H (16.5 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
