Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a round but stable base, gradually-expanding walls which flare into a thin rim, and a deep basin painted with solid red-orange slip. The exterior of the vessel depicts the Masked Mythical Being (also Anthropomorphic Mythical Being) painted in a palette of citrine, vermilion, jet, wheat, and grey hues atop a cream-hued ground. His mouth mask is shown with projecting lateral whiskers, diamond-shaped eyes, an elaborate headdress, and a lengthy body topped with a trio of trophy heads and a hummingbird on the verso. Size: 4.1" W x 2.55" H (10.4 cm x 6.5 cm).

  • Condition: Overpainting to much exterior pigmentation, and exterior surface is covered with clear sealant. Area of repair to rim with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to base and walls, with light encrustations within basin. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory labels within basin.
